The size of the problem

The children’s plight

There are currently 150 million orphaned children in the world, many of whom have been orphaned by the HIV/AIDs pandemic, which began taking the lives of millions of parents in the mid-1990s, especially in Sub-Saharan Africa. The size of the problem means that surviving relatives and orphanages are stretched to the limit as they try to help these children in need.

In need of resources

Sub-Saharan Africa has both the highest number and highest share of orphaned children in the world, followed by South Asia. While the developed world represents around one-sixth of the global population, only 10% of the world’s orphaned children live there.

Beyond the Orphanage works with government, community groups and other not-for-profit organisations to meet these children’s urgent needs. We are working to protect them and give each child the chance to build a stronger, brighter future.
